Milan, Italy

Ciao, from Italy!  In history, we have been studying Constantine and the legalization of Christianity.  Constantine signed the Edict of Milan in 313.  This allowed for freedom of worship throughout the Roman Empire.  What a great place to start our European adventures!  Here is the kids' take on Milan:

::Logan (age 10)::

Favorite thing about Milan: My favorite thing about Milan was looking at the Duomo and finding the different sculptures, like the man hanging on a cross upside down, during our scavenger hunt.

Favorite Food: Spaghetti when we ate at the little restaurant in the plaza.

One new thing I learned: Milan is a fashion capital in the world.

::Brody (age 8)::

Favorite thing about Milan: My favorite thing was going to Hillsong, the church.  It was fun to hear the music we listen to in English and Italian.

Favorite Food: Gelato!

One new thing I learned: There is graffiti everywhere in Milan.

::Lincoln (age 5)::

Favorite thing about Milan: Eating gelato all of the time and finding the elephant in the fresco during the scavenger hunt.

Favorite food: Gelato!

One new thing I learned: That the city symbol is a snake.  You see snakes on a lot of the buildings in Milan!  It was fun to search for the hidden snakes.

::Mollie (age 3)::

Favorite thing about Milan:  I found the sculpture of Jesus in the door of the church by myself!  (Church: Duomo)

Favorite food: Gelato and pizza

One new thing I learned: The hand of the angel in the church was gone.  (Mom comment: we learned that this was due to shrapnel that hit the door during WWII)

We had pizza at least once a day while we were in Italy.

They had these water fountains all over Milan.  When you stick your finger under the mouth, it sprays up.  They made for a fun game with our friends who we traveled with!

We made it to the Starbucks Roastery in Milan!  Mike didn't make it to a roastery during his 10 years with Starbucks, so getting to go to the one in Italy was a thrill!  We may or may not have visited twice a day while we were there.

After an employee gave us a full run down of exactly how the coffee roasting happens, from bean to bag.

The Duomo

Different views from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II:

 Leonardo Da Vinci lived and worked in Milan from 1482-1499.  His job was to take care of the arts and the cultural life at the Court of Milan.  During his time in Milan, he created the painting, "The Last Supper" which still is on display there.

This was a great first trip for our family!  It wasn't too far, the drive was beautiful, and the food was fantastic.  It was also thrilling as an educator to see so many connections that the kid's were able to make with the "pegs" that we've created with our memory work in school.

Arrivederci!
